Bruce Lipshutz

LipshutzThe Lipshutz group has shifted in large measure towards green chemistry in recognition of a major issue associated with the chemical enterprise: organic waste, most of which is solvent-related. Hence, a key goal is to get organic solvents out of organic reactions. To accomplish this, the Lipshutz group has introduced the concept of “designer” surfactants that enable key transition metal-catalyzed cross-couplings, and related reactions, to be carried out in water at room temperature. Considerable effort is also directed towards reducing the amount of endangered metal usage in catalysis to ppm levels enabled by micellar catalysis in water.
