Laurel Schafer completed her PhD in 1999 before beginning an NSERC PDF with T. Don Tilley at the University of California-Berkeley. In 2001, she joined the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and rose through the ranks to full Professor. She is a Canada Research Chair in Catalyst Development (Tier II) and an Associate Editor for Organometallics. She has received numerous awards including the A. P. Sloan Fellowship (2007), the Humboldt Experienced Researcher Award (2010), and the National Clara Benson Award (2015). Her research interests bridge the areas of organometallic and organic chemistry. Notably, she focuses on catalysis with early transition metals of low cost and low toxicity.
